About the series:
Dale Chihuly's "Macchia" series is another vibrant and celebrated body of work that explores the expressive possibilities of glass art. The word "Macchia" means "spot" or "stain" in Italian, which reflects the series' emphasis on bold, multicolored patterns and unexpected combinations of hues. The Macchia pieces are known for their swirling, organic forms, dynamic color contrasts, and often large-scale size.
Chihuly started the Macchia series in 1981, driven by a desire to use every color in the glassblowing process without being restricted by conventional color rules. His experimentation with layering colored glass resulted in rich, textured surfaces, often with dramatic, jagged edges and undulating, asymmetrical shapes. The pieces are typically characterized by a striking inner color core that contrasts with the outer layer, surrounded by a thin, ruffled rim of a different color, which enhances their sense of depth and dimensionality.
A distinctive feature of the Macchia series is the use of "jimmies," small bits of colored glass added to the outer surface during the glassblowing process. These spots of color give each piece an added level of texture and visual interest. The use of vivid, often unexpected color combinations in the series makes the Macchia pieces stand out as bold, playful, and dynamic works of art.
Chihuly has said that the Macchia series allowed him to break free from previous artistic constraints, experimenting with form and color in new and exciting ways. The Macchia pieces are often displayed in group installations that highlight the fluidity and motion of the glass, with the interplay of light adding to the vibrant energy of the works.
