Painted by William Hart on July 24, 1862, and restored by Edward Elbert on February 21, 1993. Signed lower right; accompanied by a brass plaque bearing the artist’s name.
Frame: 20 1/2" x 30"
Image: 13 3/4" x 23 1/2"
Condition: Image has been restored with a layer of varnish and shows light craquelure. The frame has paint loss, missing trim on both the inside and outer edges.
About: William Hart (1823–1894) was a Scottish-American landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School. After emigrating to the United States in the 1830s, he became known for his serene pastoral scenes, often depicting cattle in idyllic American landscapes. His work is characterized by soft lighting, detailed naturalism, and romanticized views of rural life. Hart was a leading figure in 19th-century American art, serving as president of the National Academy of Design and exhibiting widely throughout his career.
