About:
Wayne Potratz is a Minnesota-based sculptor known for his mastery of cast metal art. Born in St. Paul in 1942, he studied at Macalester College and earned his MA from UC Berkeley. A key figure in contemporary cast iron art, Potratz taught sculpture at the University of Minnesota for over 40 years and served as Chair of the Art Department from 1985–1998.
His work, rooted in global casting traditions, reflects influences from Native American and Asian cultures, canoeing, spiritual practices, and metallurgy. Potratz has exhibited in 30+ solo shows and 350+ group exhibitions worldwide and is represented in numerous public and private collections. He also co-founded the International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art and was honored as “Outstanding Educator” by the International Sculpture Center.
His process includes bronze, iron, aluminum, and traditional Japanese tatara steelmaking using Minnesota taconite ore.
