About:
Preston Monongye (1927–1987) was a Hopi-Navajo silversmith known for his distinctive blend of traditional Southwestern motifs and modernist design. Active from the 1960s through the 1980s, Monongye worked primarily in sterling silver, often incorporating turquoise, coral, shell, and other stones in complex mosaic inlays. His jewelry frequently featured abstract interpretations of Hopi iconography, wildlife, and geometric patterns. Monongye was part of a generation that redefined Native American jewelry in the 20th century, pushing stylistic boundaries while maintaining strong ties to cultural symbolism. He is regarded as a foundational figure in the evolution of contemporary Native American jewelry.
