Artist Bio: Paul Lauritz (California, 1889–1975). Born in Larvik, Norway, Lauritz became a noted painter based in California, specializing in portraits and desert landscapes. Early in his career, he spent time in Alaska. Raised in the picturesque Norwegian village of Larvik, he was exposed to famous painters from around the world who came there for its subject matter. One of them, an English watercolorist, gave him painting lessons in exchange for his family providing room and board. Local painters Fritz Thaulow and Christian Krogh also encouraged him as a young man. At age 16, Lauritz headed west and found work in Vancouver, Canada, and later in Portland, Oregon, as a commercial artist creating maps, posters, and decorations.
