About:

George Morrison (1919–2000) was a prominent Native American modernist painter and sculptor of Ojibwe (Grand Portage Band) heritage, known for blending abstraction with Indigenous themes. Born in Chippewa City, Minnesota, Morrison studied at the Minneapolis School of Art (now MCAD), the Art Students League in New York, and later in Paris on a Fulbright scholarship. Though his work was often associated with Abstract Expressionism, Morrison rejected the notion that Native art must conform to traditional motifs, instead forging a unique visual language rooted in landscape, memory, and form.

His most recognized works include his driftwood collages and horizon line paintings, which evoke the spiritual and physical presence of Lake Superior and the surrounding northern Minnesota environment. Throughout his career, Morrison maintained a deep connection to his Ojibwe heritage, which informed his understanding of nature and cosmology, though not always overtly represented in iconography.

Morrison exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, and his work is held in major collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Walker Art Center. He also taught at institutions such as the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Minnesota. Today, Morrison is recognized as a foundational figure in 20th-century Native American art and American modernism.
