About:
Angel Botello (1913–1986) was a Spanish-born artist who became a prominent figure in Caribbean modernism after settling in Puerto Rico. Trained in art academies in Bordeaux and Madrid, he fled the Spanish Civil War and eventually established himself in the Caribbean, where his work evolved into a vibrant blend of European modernist techniques and island themes.
Botello is known for his expressive depictions of women, children, and tropical life, rendered in mediums including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. His style features bold lines, rich color palettes, and a strong emphasis on form and emotion. In addition to his studio practice, he founded a gallery in Old San Juan, contributing significantly to the Puerto Rican art scene. His work remains widely collected for its distinct fusion of classical training and Caribbean subject matter.
