Artist Bio: Fra Angelico (c.1395–1455), born Guido di Pietro, was a Dominican friar and the pivotal Florentine painter between the International Gothic gold-ground tradition and the Renaissance, best known for the San Marco frescoes and the San Marco Altarpiece of 1439, which established the sacra conversazione format. His hallmark is early linear perspective and naturalistic depth combined with luminous color and lavish gold leaf. The nineteenth century saw a broad revival of interest in the Italian primitives, and gold-ground devotional panels and tabernacles in his manner were produced in quantity for private devotion.
