Shirley Raphael was born in Montreal. She studied at the Montreal Museum School Sir George Williams University (now Concordia), the School of Fine Arts at Boston University, and at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She exhibited actively in the 1960s and 1970s.
